August 20, 2025 (Washington, DC) — The Sikh Coalition is hosting a briefing on Capitol Hill, “Revisiting Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s Work in an Era of Transnational Repression,” on September 18 to inform congressional staffers about the life and legacy of Sikh human rights defender Jaswant Singh Khalra and today’s modern threat of transnational repression.

While this briefing is primarily intended for Capitol Hill audiences, sangat members will be able to watch via livestream. Save the date on your calendar for Thursday, September 18, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM ET, and follow us on social media to receive further updates about how to watch.

Speakers on the briefing panel include:

  • Navkiran Kaur Khalra, Daughter of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra
  • Sukhman S. Dhami, Executive Director, Ensaaf
  • Dr. Gunisha Kaur, Medical Director, Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights
  • Dr. Stephen Schneck, Past Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom
  • Harman Singh, Executive Director, Sikh Coalition

The Sikh Coalition has been commemorating the 30th anniversary of Bhai Khalra’s murder in several different ways. On August 7, we hosted a virtual “teach-in” with four panel discussions; we also used that opportunity to share multiple advocacy action items attendees could take. And in July, we shared a toolkit to help sangat members propose and pass local resolutions in honor of Bhai Khalra. We remain committed to elevating Bhai Khalra’s story with a wide range of audiences, especially as Sikhs at home and abroad continue to face threats from the Indian state.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
