Sikh Coalition Publishes New Report on Transnational Repression

July 22, 2024 (Washington, DC) — In an effort to better inform policymakers, members of the media, and allies in the civil rights ecosystem about threats facing the Sikh community, the Sikh Coalition has published a new report titled, ”So Many Targets:” Contextualizing Modern Indian Transnational Repression Against the Sikh Community.

So Many Targets includes a definition of transnational repression, and an overview of events—both historical and since 2023—driving Indian transnational repression against the Sikh diaspora. It then explores multiple different kinds of transnational repression against U.S.-based Sikhs, sourced from both direct interviews conducted by the Sikh Coalition with numerous individuals and gurdwaras as well as publicly-available sources. The report concludes with a link to the Sikh Coalition’s constantly updated list of policy recommendations for what the White House, federal agencies, and Congress can do to better protect U.S.-based Sikhs.

“We created So Many Targets to consolidate all of the most up to date information about this threat to Sikh civil rights and lives in one place,” explained Harman Singh, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “We are hoping that it will serve as a valuable resource for individuals not familiar with the scope and urgency of this threat—particularly policymakers, who must take further action to protect not just the Sikh community but all communities from transnational repression.”

The Sikh Coalition is deeply grateful to the sangat members and gurdwaras who spoke with us, both on and off the record, for this report. In the meantime, we continue not only our advocacy around transnational repression, but our other work in defense of threats faced by the U.S.-based sangat, from hate crimes and workplace discrimination to racial profiling and restrictive education policies.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
